Michael Braz, Living Arts Legend Takes the Emma Kelly Stage

Our 2020-21 ONE Series begins on Thursday, September 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the Emma Kelly Theater with Averitt Center Legends of the Arts recipient, Dr. Michael Braz. Dr. Michael Braz is an internationally known performer, music educator, and composer.

Our 2020-21 ONE Series begins on Thursday, September 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the Emma Kelly Theater with Averitt Center Legends of the Arts recipient, Dr. Michael Braz.

Dr. Michael Braz is an internationally known performer, music educator, and composer. For over 50 years, his pianistic and teaching skills have served to make music and musicianship accessible to children and adults on three continents.

Dr. Braz received his B.M. and M.M. degrees from the University of Miami, later completing a Ph.D. at Florida State University. Currently Principal Keyboard of the Hilton Head Symphony, he also performs with the Charleston Symphony and Savannah Philharmonic.

Professor Emeritus of Music at Georgia Southern University, Dr. Braz’s longtime teaching experience includes music education, theory, and composition. Internationally, he has enjoyed artist residencies at St. Benedict’s School (Derby, England), Nepal Music Center (Kathmandu), and Huazhong Normal University (Wuhan, China).

Closer to home, Dr. Braz served as President of the Statesboro Arts Council and has been active in community music, founding Tallahassee’s Capital Children’s Chorus and co-founding the Statesboro Youth Chorale. His honors include Georgia Southern’s President’s Medal and the Statesboro Herald’s “Humanitarian of the Year” award. In fall 2009, he was recognized by the David H. Averitt Center as its third—and first living—“Legend of the Arts.”
