One Dead, One in Custody after Late Night Lanier Drive Shooting

A late night shooting over the weekend leaves one dead and one in custody in Statesboro.

Statesboro Police Department and the Georgia Southern University Police Department responded to reports of gunfire around 1:45 AM Saturday morning at Stadium Walk Plaza at 200 Lanier Drive.

This shooting location contains multiple businesses, including Cowboy’s Bar and Grill and Smoke Crave, which share a common parking lot across from Paulson Stadium.

Upon arrival officers located a male laying in the parking lot suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.  The victim was transported to East Georgia Regional Medical Center by Bulloch County EMS where he was pronounced deceased.

The victim has been identified as 34 year old Lephilip Wright of Tami and Sheri Lane in Statesboro.  Wright was originally from East Dublin, Georgia.  His next of kin has been notified of his death.

Detectives responded and began the investigation, interviewing multiple witnesses, processing the crime scene, and gathering physical evidence.

Probable cause was developed to charge Victor Boatwright, 25,  from Twin City, Georgia with one count of Murder and one count of Aggravated Assault.

Boatwright was taken into custody with the assistance of deputies of the Emanuel County Sheriff’s Office and transported to the Bulloch County Jail where he awaits further judicial action.

Neither the suspect nor victim was affiliated with Georgia Southern University.
