Pat Jones June 9th Questions

Nearly 10,000 Bulloch County residents have applied to receive their ballet to vote by mail for the June 9th Primary Election as of May 21st according to Pat Jones, Bulloch County Election Supervisor.  This has been very overwhelming to local elections officials who have been swamped with voter questions and calls regarding voting by absentee ballots.

According to Jones 9741 applications were processed but they are showing 9502 accepted.  The reason for the difference are these individuals have since since cancelled the mail in ballot and are instead voting in person.

Through the first week of early voting 362 have voted in person and 3937 by absentee ballots.

Every Georgian received by mail and absentee ballet application request form.  Due to COVID-19 challenges, local and statewide officials are encouraging every Georgia Citizen to vote by mail this election.

Many of the trained, volunteer poll workers remain in the high risk category which continue to have a shelter in place order by Governor Kemp through June 12th.  This adds to the challenges local officials are encountering in conducting the election as efficiently as possible.

Pat Jones has put together some helpful information regarding the election and absentee voting we are sharing here.  These should cover any questions you have regarding the June 9th election.

Bulloch County Primary June 9th Election Information

COVID-19 virus has (will continue) to cause changes in our daily lives and voting process. In order to protect the citizens of Georgia, the Secretary of State is strongly encouraging our voters to vote by mail. The state has mailed 6.9 million absentee applications to the active voters. We urge you to vote by mail.

We are posting the information concerning early voting and Election Day voting as we currently know it. As things change with the COVID-19, this is subject to change also.

MAIL-OUT ABSENTEE BALLOT

A voter can complete an Application for an Absentee Ballot. Once we receive your application, we can mail your ballot to the address requested if outside of Bulloch County or to the address where you are currently registered to vote in the county (or alternate address for physically disabled voter). The state will be mailing ballots through June 5th.

To check your Absentee Ballot Status or to request an absentee ballet, if you did not receive a ballet application by mail, go to www.mvp.sos.ga.gov/MVP/

Voter Information for the General Primary and Nonpartisan Election

❖ A voter must decide which primary/election to vote – Democratic, Republican, or Nonpartisan
❖ The Nonpartisan candidates (Judges and Board of Education) are on the Democratic & Republican ballot.
❖ How you voted (if you voted) in the March Presidential Preference Primary has no effect on how you vote in the May Election. You can switch parties.
❖ If you did not vote in March, the presidential candidates for the party you select in June’s election will be on the ballot.
❖ How you vote in the June Election has no effect on how you vote in November.
❖ HOWEVER, how you vote in June will determine how you vote in the August Runoff Election. If you voted
➢ Democratic in June, you will have to vote Democratic in August. If a runoff is necessary, it will be for the office of the United States Senate.
➢ Republican in June, you will have to vote Republican in July. If a runoff is necessary, it could be for the (county) office of the Solicitor General.
➢ Nonpartisan in June, you can vote Nonpartisan or you can declare a party (Republican or Democratic) in July. If a runoff is necessary, it could be for the (local) office of BOE District 7.

Please go to www.mvp.sos.ga.gov to see your “personal” ballot. Bulloch County has:

❖ 3 House of Representative Districts up for election (158, 159, 160)
❖ 2 County Commission Districts. District 1 has 2 representatives – this year Seat A is up for election. District 2 has 4 representatives – this year Seats A & C are up for election. The county commissioners have staggered Terms.
❖ 8 Board of Education Districts: The districts each have 1 representative. The terms are staggered – this year District 1, 3, 7, 8 are up for election.

When you vote, you may not see an office on your ballot – Why? The office may not have a candidate qualify in the party you are voting, or you may be in the district (BOE) that is not up for election. In the General Primary & Nonpartisan General Election, the Nonpartisan offices are the only offices that are

❖ eligible for write-in qualified candidates
❖ will not appear on the November General ballot.
