Over 30 Statesboro women showed up on a very cool morning to participate in Habitat’s International Women Build Day, sponsored by Lowes, on Saturday.  They were working on Bulloch County Habitat for Humanity’s 58th and 59th homes under construction located at 117 and 119 Green Street in the city.  Since beginning in Statesboro in 1991, Bulloch Habitat has completed 57 homes.  The women helping today included two First Ladies;  Jane Marrerro, First Lady of Georgia Southern University and Adrianne McCollar, First Lady to the Mayor of Statesboro.  There was also a team of women from East Georgia Regional Medical Center.  Councilwoman Shari Barr and her granddaughter, Grace Stanfield, were also there to help.  Shari was one of the founding board members who helped start the Habitat chapter here under the leadership of Dr. Bill Perry.

“We love it when the community turns out to help and today it is extraordinary, with over 30 women coming out”, said Kathy Jenkins, Executive Director of Bulloch County Habitat.  “We work every Saturday and need 10 to 15 each week to keep our builds moving forward.  Each week we post the location and information on the build on a green bar at the top of our website.  Volunteers can sign up through the web site.  We look forward to seeing more of the community out in the coming weeks helping these two families build their homes and realize their dream of home ownership.”

The public is encouraged to learn about Habitat and sign up for any of their volunteer activities. They have a limited number of volunteer spaces each week, so it is helpful if you schedule a work day in advance. Individuals or groups who wish to schedule a workday for construction should contact Marcus Toole at (912) 489-2076, extension 203, or email Marcus at [email protected]. Please provide your name, telephone number, email, your preferred date(s) to work and, if applicable, the group’s name and expected number of volunteers. You will receive a confirmation email with the date you are scheduled. Saturday volunteers are welcome to drop in at the current build location (see banner at the top of the page). Construction volunteers should wear closed toe shoes and be at least 16 years old.

Bulloch Habitat Opens their application process annually for prospective home ownership.  To review the criteria to apply you can click here.

If construction is not your thing, but you still want to help, Kathy explained there are lot’s of other ways to help.  From shopping, donating or volunteering at Spike’s Restore, sponsoring or helping with the Community Flag Program, serving on committees or helping in the office.
