County Wide Curfew

In a called meeting today, Bulloch County Commissioners voted unanimously to enact a countywide curfew from 10 PM to 6 AM beginning tomorrow night, April 1st and continue until April 27th unless modified.  They did exempt essential workers including employees of grocery stores, pharmacies and gas stations.  The order makes it punishable to a fine not to exceed $1,000 or 90 days in jail for violators.  This is a countywide order which includes municipalities including the City of Statesboro.

Chairman Roy Thompson instructed Sheriff Noel Brown to vigorously enforce the curfew, the Governor’s shelter in place order and to stop gathering of 10 or more.  He went on to stress the point that the actions they are taking seem to be working in slowing the spread of COVID-19, but it takes all citizens to do their part in defeating this deadly virus.

The Chairman showed images of large gatherings from basketball courts to parties at the river and in neighborhoods which is in direct violation of the order.  He did this to let folks know that they are watching social media and will respond accordingly as citizens keep identifying and calling out people who are not complying.

Chairman Thompson specifically mentioned Lowe’s and Walmart, where there have been many complaints from citizens regarding the number of people in the stores.  He encouraged all businesses to take this seriously and to take steps to protect their employees and customers.

You can still go to parks and trails as long as you comply with social distancing which is keeping six feet apart and not gather in groups.

The chairman has asked County Manager Tom Couch to begin drafting a stronger shelter in place or safe at home order if citizens continue to not comply.
