Professor William James honored by Bulloch County Historical Society

The Bulloch County Historical Society is honoring Professor William James, the founder of Statesboro High and Industrial School, later known as William James High School.

The William James Legacy Project has three events scheduled with descendants of William James, Bulloch County Schools, the Bulloch County Historical Society, and Georgia Southern University to commemorate the Statesboro High & Industrial School and the education legacy of William James.

These events and the historical marker are supported by the Jack N. and Addie D. Averitt Foundation

• Sunday, October 27, 11 a.m., Church service at Historical First African Baptist Church with Rev. James Howard and Deacon Earl Donaldson

• Sunday, October 27, 3:00 p.m., at Luetta Moore Park – Dedication of William James Marker on the site of what is now Luetta Moore Park in Statesboro, and walking tour of neighborhood where his home, school and dorms existed. A reception will follow in the Community Center at Luetta Moore Park. Proclamations will be read by the City of Statesboro and the Bulloch County Board of Commissioners.

• Monday, October 28, 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m., at Pittman Park United Methodist Church – Monthly Meeting of Bulloch County Historical Society. The featured program will be, “A history of William James and his education legacy in Bulloch Co.,” presented by William James family members and Dr. Brent Tharpe of GA Southern University. The Statesboro High School Statesboro Steel Band, select vocalists from the Statesboro High School Choral Program, and the William James Middle School Band will perform from 11:15 – 11:55 during lunch, and the program begins at 12 noon.
