Bulloch County Commissioners broke ground today on the much anticipated Senior Center. In November 2017, Bulloch County was awarded a $750,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) from the Georgia Department of Community Affairs to construct a new 6,200 square foot senior citizen’s center. The new Senior Center is being constructed on a County owned vacant parking lot located on Granade Street, near Ogeechee Area Hospice, in the City of Statesboro. The land was part of the former Bulloch Memorial Hospital campus.
The new facility will replace the current 3,925 square foot space located at 515 Denmark Street. The new Senior Citizens Center will also offer more functional space and better access to shopping opportunities and medical facilities for users, while also relieving a wait list of approximately 32 people. Bulloch County will contribute an amount in excess of $300,000 and other in-kind services towards the success of the project.
After nearly a year of design work and coordination to obtain necessary approvals and permits, Bulloch County is proud to begin the construction of the project which will have positive impact on the senior citizens and surrounding community. A.M. Lavender & Associates of Statesboro, Georgia will serve as the general contractor, while Carter Watkins Architects of Monroe, Georgia will provide construction management. Construction is anticipated to be completed by November of this year.
