Select school sites collecting canned food now through Nov. 9

Bulloch County Schools will host a We CAN Help food drive on Nov. 5 – 9, for our community’s two local food banks. The project is in partnership with Woodmen Life’s We CAN Fight Food Insecurity campaign, and in recognition of November being National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Month. It will also help provide for families during the upcoming holidays. The school district’s goal is to collect more than six tons of canned food to the Statesboro Food Bank and Christian Services Ministries’ food bank.

“We have 14 of our campuses which will serve as collection sites,” said Superintendent Charles Wilson. “We encourage our employees, families, and anyone in the community, who would like to assist in this effort, to drop off their canned food donations to one of these sites. “

The project has the commitment and support of the two local food banks, and they will collect the donations from the school system locations at the end of the campaign. The collection sites are listed below.

Woodmen Life will reward schools for their efforts. The school that collects the most canned food items, based on a percentage of their student enrollment, will receive a $1,000 grant. The second-place school will receive $500, and the top individual class or student organization will receive $100.

Collection Locations

  • District Offices: Bulloch County Schools Central Office
  • Elementary Schools: Brooklet, Julia P. Bryant, Langston Elementary, Mattie Lively, Mill Creek, Portal, Sallie Zetterower, and Stilson
  • Middle/High Schools: Langston Chapel, Portal, Southeast Bulloch Middle, Southeast Bulloch High, and William James

Examples of canned food items being collected

The campaign will just focus on collecting canned food items. Any canned goods are welcome, but this is a list of suggested canned goods we’d like to collect, and if you’d like to consider healthier food choices, look for items packed in water, low-sodium, or canned in juice rather than light or heavy syrups:

  • Canned beans, canned fruit in juice, canned vegetables, canned soups
  • Canned tuna in water, canned chicken, canned stews, other canned meats
  • Canned pasta sauces, canned spaghetti sauces, canned tomatoes
  • Canned beef or vegetable broths, canned evaporated milk
  • Canned nuts
